Finding Work While You're Here
Few employers will bend the rules and employ someone without a visa, with the exception perhaps of some bars and clubs, who are always on the lookout for international staff – a good bet is the happening Roppongi area (p.156). On the downside, even if you do find work here, it’s unlikely that your employer will sponsor an official visa.
Job hunters that have a visa and wish to change job are in a much stronger position. The procedure is the same as for finding work before you come (p.62), but employers will be far keener to meet you if you’re in the country and legally available for work. Check out the Japan Times classifieds every Monday. Networking is also a good idea, so keep an eye out for any meetings and events in your industry sector. The Foreigners Employment Service Center in Roppongi (03 3588 8369, www.tfemploy.go.jp) can offer good general advice.
