Sandboarding & Skiing

Head out to any stretch of desert in the interior of Oman, find yourself some big dunes and feel the rush of the wind as you take a fast ride down the sandy slopes. It’s an easy sport to learn, it doesn’t hurt when you fall, and you’ll feel a real sense of achievement when you master it and glide to the bottom. Most people tend to use old snowboards, but you’ll even find the odd skier taking to the sandy slopes. Standard snowboards or skis can be used. The best places for sandboarding and skiing are where you’ll find the biggest dunes – the Wahiba Sands area or the massive dunes of the Empty Quarter in the south-west of the country. Many tour companies and camps provide equipment and direction. One of these is the Desert Camp at Wahiba Sands, which offers sandskiing or surfing from their permanent campsite.
