Surfing

The idea of surfing in Oman may not inspire images of Hawaii style waves, but you’d be surprised by how popular the sport is here. And really, you generally have all the ingredients you need for a good day’s surfing. Although it might not be one of the world’s great surf spots, Oman is certainly one of the better places to catch a wave in the Gulf because part of its coast lies on the Indian Ocean. So surfers in other Gulf countries, like the UAE, often make regular trips to Oman to get their fix. While there are currently no major surf clubs in Oman, the Dubai surfers’ group has an excellent website that gives information on surfing in the UAE, the Arabian Gulf and in Oman (surfersofdubai.com).

The eastern side of Masirah Island is one of the better surfing spots. It’s easily reached by ferry from Sana on the mainland, followed by a short drive to the other side of the island. Ferry times depend on the tide. It obviously depends on the season but the waves here average four to six feet.
