Alcohol
The legal age for purchasing alcohol is 20 in Japan. Everything from beer to wine and spirits can be found at local convenience stores and groceries, while there are some specialist shops for sake, umeshu and imported wines. Beer and chūhai (an alcopop drink) can be brought for a few hundred yen from street vending machines, and many people stop off for a sneaky drink between bars. Imported spirits are incredibly cheap, but drinks such as champagne can cost up to 20% more than what you’d pay abroad. A bottle of decent wine will cost about ¥3,000 but there are some good deals to be had for around ¥1,500. Shōchū, a strong domestic liquor, is probably the cheapest alcohol available, and blends with just about anything. In general, domestic brands will be cheaper than imports. Airport prices are duty free, allowing for good savings, so it’s worth stocking up when passing through. If wine is your tipple of choice, YaMaYa Wine Cellars are scattered across the city, and they have a good selection of wines at reasonable prices.
