Camera Equipment
Many of the major camera brands are Japanese, so it’s no surprise that it’s easy to find a great camera. The easiest way to get one is to head over to the large electronics chains like Yodobashi, Bic, or Sakuraya, which offer a wide range of Polaroids, digital cameras and film cameras, as well as all the film and accessories to go with them. Most large outlets provide film processing services. Akihabara is also worth a look, but you may find that the prices are not quite as competitive. If you’re looking for something more technical, Lemon Camera and Fujikoshi Camera stock new and used Leica, Hassleblad, and Rollei cameras. Most of these shops are online too, so you can browse before heading down there. In general, digital cameras have dropped in price, and some cameras, such as medium formats, are slightly cheaper in Japan. Film processing is more expensive than in other countries. National Photo specialises in professional processing in addition to the basic services. Most large outlets also provide film-processing services. Guarantees for items bought in Japan are generally only valid in Japan.
