Art
Art is a big business and there are hundreds of small galleries dotted all over the city. If you take a stroll around some of the more fashionable neighbourhoods, like Daikanyama, Omotesandō, Aoyama or Ginza, you’ll stumble across many, each filled with various different styles. Traditional Japanese art and modern works are both popular and most galleries will sell the work being displayed. To commission an artist for a one-off piece, it’s best to talk to the gallery owner or a representative. Ceramics are of particular interest to locals, due to the country’s rich pottery history, and calligraphy and woodblock prints are both perennial favourites. In fact, modern calligraphy and woodblock printing are the hot mediums to have at the moment, so it’s a good time to invest in some up-and-coming, talented local calligraphers and print artists.
