Perfumes & Cosmetics

The selection of cosmetics and perfumes in the city is amazing, and you can find virtually anything you want. Basic cosmetic needs can be met at most local pharmacies, while for brand name cosmetics, try department stores like Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi, Tokyu Hands and Isetan, and Daimaru, which sells a massive range of brands. It offers most major international brands like Chanel, Dior, Clinique, MAC, NARS, Helena Rubenstein and Napoleon Perdis. It will also have a good number of domestic brands, the most internationally famous being Shiseido and Shu Uemura. Again, prices are a bit steeper than abroad, and you might be able to get some items cheaper in duty free.

Shu Uemura is particularly famous for its lash products, sold at the company’s trademark ‘lash bar’. The cleansing oils range, which sometimes feature limited edition packaging by famous Japanese artists are also coveted.

Products sold at spas and salons are usually highly marked up and are much more expensive. Isetan has an excellent perfume counter in both the main building and in its men’s department in Shinjuku, as has Barneys. They carry brands such as Marc Jacobs, Creed, Demeter, and most other big names. Takashimaya has a custom perfume-blending salon, where you can sample the different notes and design your own signature scent. Weleda does an excellent selection of products for sensitive skin and pregnant mothers.
