Vegetarian Food

Despite its Buddhist roots, vegetarianism is rare in Japan. However, you can find veggie items at most health food stores. Tôfu is popular, but it’s usually cooked in a fish or meat stock. Many things that are labeled or described on menus as ‘vegetarian’ often come with the hidden surprises of pork or beef extract, so when in doubt, ask (you may need some Japanese help if your language skills are not advanced). Two shops worth trying are Natural House and the online Foreign Buyers Club.
